What Happens During an Emergency Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Wisdom teeth are surrounded by many tales and myths, a popular one being that they’re a token of good luck. We can’t confirm whether that’s true, but we know that they come with a slew of problems.

They are teeth positioned in the back of the mouth, typically the last set of teeth to erupt during your late teens and early twenties. They cause discomfort, pain, and sometimes even tooth misalignment as they erupt. As such, one may be inclined to an emergency wisdom tooth extraction:

Do I Need Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Impacted wisdom teeth develop in an angled position or are horizontally aligned. As a result, they arrive misaligned. They can press against your other teeth or their roots, causing pain and possibly tooth movement.

Though wisdom tooth removal is not considered a dental emergency, it can cause significant pain and agony. Therefore, a dentist or oral surgeon may be required to perform an emergency wisdom teeth extraction. Here are signs that you need a wisdom tooth extraction:

  • Headaches
  • Teeth shifting
  • Jaw ache
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Swollen gums
  • Toothaches
  • Infections, e.g., pericoronitis

What Happens During an Emergency Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

If you suffer from any of the symptoms mentioned above of impacted wisdom teeth, you may need emergency dental care. If your teeth are impacted, your dental surgeon will need to perform a surgical extraction rather than a routine extraction.

While each dentist’s methods and procedures may vary slightly, here’s what to expect when you see the dentist for an emergency wisdom teeth extraction:

  • The doctor will apply a local anaesthetic to the area around your tooth. In minutes, the area around the tooth will be completely numb.
  • If you have nervousness or dentophobia, they may use sedation, and this could be given as a pill, inhalant, or IV.
  • The dentist will then enlarge the tooth socket with an elevator and forceps by applying pressure on the tooth from various angles.
  • The dentist will then use forceps to hold the tooth and rock it back and forth. They may also rotate the tooth to separate it from the ligaments.
  • Finally, the doctor may use one or two stitches to seal the wound. You may then be placed in the recovery room, and given pain medication, and information on how to care for yourself following the treatment.
