What Happens During an Emergency Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

While each dentist’s methods and procedures may vary slightly, here’s what to expect when you see the dentist for an emergency wisdom teeth extraction:
- The doctor will apply a local anaesthetic to the area around your tooth. In minutes, the area around the tooth will be completely numb.
- If you have nervousness or dentophobia, they may use sedation, and this could be given as a pill, inhalant, or IV.
- The dentist will then enlarge the tooth socket with an elevator and forceps by applying pressure on the tooth from various angles.
- The dentist will then use forceps to hold the tooth and rock it back and forth. They may also rotate the tooth to separate it from the ligaments.
- Finally, the doctor may use one or two stitches to seal the wound. You may then be placed in the recovery room, and given pain medication, and information on how to care for yourself following the treatment.
