Invisalign Rockingham – All You Need to Know

clear teeth aligning system on moulded form

If your teeth require straightening but you hesitate to get braces because you do not like the metallic look of traditional braces, there is a clear teeth aligning system that you can consider. More people are choosing these clear aligners because they look a lot better than traditional metal braces. One such system is called Invisalign. Here is more information about the system.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the original clear aligner system that was introduced to consumers in 1998 as an alternative to metal braces. The aligner is constructed from a flexible thermoplastic. When applied to teeth that require aligning, the clear material is not very noticeable compared to the wires and brackets of conventional braces.

How Does it Work?

The dentist creates a three-dimensional image of your mouth and jaw. From this, he will create customised aligners. The aligner forms a tight fit around your teeth, and it applies steady and gentle pressure against the teeth to push them toward alignment. You will feel pressure, but not pain. You wear the aligner most of the day and night except when you are eating or cleaning your teeth. The recommendation is to wear them for at least 20 hours a day.

As your teeth alignment gradually shifts, you will switch to a new set of aligners to continue this pressure. This occurs every one to two weeks based on your orthodontist’s instructions.

How Can It Help My Teeth?

When you wear Invisalign, it gently pushes your teeth toward the correct alignment. According to Invisalign, it has the potential to solve certain dental problems which include:

  • certain forms of overbite, underbite, and crossbite issues
  • open bite
  • crowded teeth
  • gap teeth

What are the Pros and Cons

Here are some of Invisalign’s advantages:

  1. They look better. With the clear material, they are much less noticeable than traditional braces.
  2. You can remove them easily.
  3. You can brush and floss your teeth easier by removing them.
  4. There are fewer problems with breakage compared to traditional braces.

Here are some disadvantages:

  1. It is less effective for more complex alignment issues.
  2. It requires discipline from you to keep them on for 20 – 22 hours per day.
  3. You have to remove them when you eat or drink. For some, this is an inconvenience especially when you are out in a restaurant. You will have to excuse yourself to take care of this in the restroom.
  4. Your teeth may feel sore after you remove the aligners. This can limit your choice of foods. It is best to avoid hard foods.
