Common Dental Emergencies and How to Address Them

Pain Of Tooth Decay On Teeth X-Ray

It’s essential to address dental issues promptly to avoid complications. However, certain situations require immediate care. Unexpected dental emergencies, such as a knocked-out tooth or a sudden abscess, can be distressing and painful. Knowing how to recognise these emergencies and how to manage them can make all the difference. At Rockingham Dental Centre, we offer emergency dental services to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible during these stressful situations.

What Are Dental Emergencies?

A dental emergency involves conditions that require immediate attention, often related to severe pain, bleeding, or potential tooth loss. Here are some common dental emergencies and guidelines on how to handle them.

Toothache

Toothaches are one of the most frequent dental complaints and may indicate an underlying issue such as tooth decay. While some cases might not require immediate intervention, symptoms like swelling often demand urgent care. Avoid applying aspirin or painkillers directly to the gums, as this can damage the tissue. Instead, use a cold compress on the outside of the affected area and contact your dentist immediately.

Chipped or Broken Teeth

Accidents or biting into something hard can cause teeth to chip or break, leading to pain and discomfort. If this happens, rinse your mouth with warm water, apply gauze if there’s bleeding, and use a cold compress for swelling. Prompt dental attention is critical to prevent further damage and alleviate pain.

Broken Orthodontics

The metal components of braces can sometimes become loose or break, causing discomfort and affecting their function. If a wire or bracket breaks, attempt to gently reposition it to a more comfortable spot and seek dental help promptly to prevent injury or further complications.

Abscess

A tooth abscess is a severe infection near the root of a tooth or in the gums, and it requires urgent dental care. Left untreated, it can spread to surrounding tissues and cause significant pain. Contact your dentist immediately if you suspect an abscess.

What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?

Signs That You Need Emergency Dental Care

Here are some key indicators that warrant emergency dental treatment:

Excessive Bleeding

Whether it’s from the gums, a mouth ulcer, or following oral surgery, prolonged or heavy bleeding requires immediate attention.

Severe Pain

Cavities or infections can cause extreme discomfort, especially when aggravated by certain foods or drinks. If rinsing with salt water and flossing doesn’t alleviate the pain, or if swelling develops, seek emergency care.

Knocked-Out Tooth

In the event of an accident that results in a tooth being knocked out, prompt action is essential. Contact your dentist right away, and if possible, place the tooth in a glass of milk and bring it with you to the appointment.
