Can Adults Be Sedated at the Dentist?

sedation dentistry

Some patients, child or adult, feel uneasy when at the dentist. Some are afraid of feeling pain, and some are anxious to undergo a dental procedure. To manage the discomfort, sedation dentistry is used.

What is Sedation?

Sedation is a practice in dentistry (sleep dentistry) where anaesthesia is used to help patients relax or sleep during a dental procedure. It has various levels:

  • General anaesthesia – The patient is unconscious.
  • Deep sedation – The patient is on the edge of being conscious and can be easily awakened.
  • Moderate sedation – The patient is conscious but may find it hard to express themself through words (slurring) and to remember the procedure.
  • Mild sedation – Patient is relaxed and awake.

Types of Sedation Options at the Dentist

1. Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is more commonly known as laughing gas. It is inhaled via an oxygen mask and causes minimal sedation. You’ll be conscious during the procedure and will be able to drive home.

2. IV Sedation

Intravenous sedation at the dentist provides a moderate or deep effect. It can also be used for general anaesthesia and is introduced to the body through a vein.  This can be completed in a dentist setting or in a hospital based on patient needs.

3. Oral Sedation

Oral sedation may take the form of a prescription drug that is taken one hour before the procedure. It offers minimal to moderate sedation depending on the dosage given.

When is Sedation an Option?

Some patients feel anxious when seeing the dentist, especially when a certain procedure is involved. Sedation aids in alleviating the uneasiness. It also provides comfort during the process by helping manage a bad gag reflex and lowering the possibility of the patient feeling pain.
