Braces – All You Need To Know

Few people are blessed with perfect teeth. For those that don’t, crooked and misaligned teeth can create shame and a general lack of confidence in professional and social circumstances. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment, particularly braces, can significantly improve your smile. Here’s everything you need to know about braces:

How Do Braces Move Teeth?

Braces apply consistent pressure to jaws and teeth to shift their position and affect the appearance of your smile. The archwire has brackets that are bonded to the teeth to put pressure on the teeth. As such, your teeth gradually shift into the desired position.

This is because the periodontal ligaments, the soft tissue that surrounds the teeth and bone, can expand or compress when the teeth move. When a tooth is moved to the right using braces, the ligament on the right is compressed, and new bone grows on the left to cover the gap. Here are a few things that braces help with:

Overcrowding

When the jaw-to-tooth connection is too small and/or the teeth are too big, overcrowding is inevitable. Using braces, however, the teeth can be moved back, forward, and across to allow them to sit side by side.

Overbites and Overjets

The vertical overlap of the top and lower teeth is known as an overbite while the protrusion of the top teeth relative to the lower teeth is known as an overjet. With braces, you can move your teeth up or down, or a combination of both to treat the overjet or overbite.

Moving Teeth Forward

They can also be used to pull your teeth towards your lips besides pushing the teeth towards the palate. Nickel-titanium archwires with shape memory can be used to pull teeth forward. The wire is bent to hold the tooth and push it forward for a perfect smile.

What Problems are Usually Fixed with Braces?

The therapy phase is divided into three stages:

1. Leveling and Alignment

The first step is to align your teeth so that they are parallel. Teeth can move up and down, as well as across so that all your teeth’s edges are in a straight line.

2. Bite Problems

After your teeth are aligned, the braces are then adjusted to correct any bite issues, such as crossbite, underbite or overbite. If you have any gaps, they will also be addressed at this stage.

3. Finishing Touches

After months of treatment, we’ll then finish with some tidying up and fine-tuning so that all teeth are in the best position. After this, we’ll then remove the braces.
