Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most adults with one or more missing teeth are suitable candidates. You're likely a good candidate if you:

  • Have one or more missing, loose, or failing teeth
Are finished with removable dentures that slip or rub
  • Have generally good oral health
  • Have enough jawbone to support the implant (or are willing to have a bone graft)
  • Are a non-smoker, or willing to stop during the healing period

We'll confirm your suitability at your consultation using a clinical exam and digital imaging.

"What if I don't have enough bone?" This is one of the most common concerns we hear. If you've been told elsewhere that you're not a candidate, get a second opinion with us. Bone grafting, sinus lifts, and zygomatic implant techniques mean most patients who were previously turned away can still have implants placed successfully.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that's surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once healed, a custom-made crown, bridge or denture attaches to the implant, restoring the look, feel and function of a natural tooth.

Each implant has three parts:

  1. The implant post: a titanium screw anchored into your jawbone
  2. The abutment: the connector that sits above the gum line
  3. The restoration: the crown, bridge or denture that replaces the visible tooth

Over 3 to 6 months, the bone naturally fuses with the titanium in a process called osseointegration. This creates a permanent foundation that can last a lifetime with proper care.

Your Implant Options at Rockingham Dental Centre

Different situations call for different implant solutions. Your dentist will recommend the right option at your consultation.

Close-Up Shot of Dental Implant Model

Single tooth implant

Replaces one missing tooth without affecting the teeth on either side. The best long-term alternative to a bridge.

dental bridge

Implant-supported bridge

Replaces 2 or more missing teeth in a row using 2 implants. More stable than a traditional bridge and doesn't require filing down healthy neighbouring teeth.

all-on-4-dental-procedure

All-on-4 dental implants

Replaces a full arch of teeth using just 4 implants. Ideal for patients missing most or all of their upper or lower teeth. Fixed, non-removable, and often placed with same-day temporary teeth.

overdentures

Implant-retained dentures (overdentures)

Full dentures that clip securely onto 2 to 4 implants. A more affordable full-arch option that dramatically improves denture stability.

Our Dental Implant Process

Step 1 — Consultation and assessment (60 minutes)
Your dentist reviews your medical and dental history, examines your mouth, and discusses your goals. We'll take digital X-rays and a 3D OPG scan if needed to assess your jawbone.

Step 2 — Treatment plan and quote
You'll receive a written, itemised treatment plan and quote. We'll walk you through each step, explain the risks, and answer any questions. No pressure, no surprises.

Step 3 — Implant placement surgery (1 to 2 hours per implant)
The titanium implant is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Sedation options are available for anxious patients or longer procedures. Most patients return to work the next day.

Step 4 — Healing and osseointegration (3 to 6 months)
The bone fuses naturally around the implant. You'll attend short review appointments to check healing. A temporary crown or denture can usually be worn during this time.

Step 5 — Final restoration
Once healing is complete, we attach the abutment and fit your custom-made crown, bridge or denture. At this point, your new tooth is fully functional; eat, speak and smile normally.

Step 6 — Ongoing care
We'll see you every 6 months to keep your implant and surrounding gums healthy. With proper care, your implant is designed to last a lifetime.

Dental Implant Recovery: What to Expect

  • Days 1 to 3 — Some swelling, mild discomfort and minor bruising. Managed easily with Panadol or Nurofen. Most patients return to work the next day.
  • Days 4 to 10 — Swelling subsides. Stitches removed at your first review (around day 7 to 14).
  • Weeks 2 to 6 — Soft food diet. Gums fully healed. You're back to normal daily activity.
  • Months 3 to 6 — Osseointegration (bone fusing with the implant) completes. Lower jaw usually heals in 3 to 4 months; upper jaw takes 4 to 6 months.
  • After final crown — You eat, speak and smile normally. Maintain with regular brushing, flossing and 6-monthly check-ups.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Look and feel natural — indistinguishable from your own teeth
  • Permanent solution — designed to last a lifetime with proper care
  • Preserve jawbone — stimulate the bone the way natural tooth roots do, preventing the "sunken" facial appearance common with long-term denture wearers
  • Eat anything — chew steak, apples, nuts, corn on the cob without fear of movement
  • Clear speech — no slipping or slurring as can happen with loose dentures
  • Protect adjacent teeth — unlike a bridge, implants don't require filing down the healthy teeth either side
  • Restore confidence — smile, laugh and speak without self-consciousness
  • High success rate — clinical studies consistently report 95% to 98% long-term success for well-placed implants

Risks and Considerations

Dental implant surgery is a safe, well-established procedure with a very high success rate, but like any surgical procedure, it carries some risk. We discuss these openly with you before treatment so you can make a fully informed decision:

  • Infection at the implant site (peri-implantitis) — minimised with good oral hygiene and follow-up care
Temporary numbness or nerve sensitivity — rare, managed with 3D CBCT imaging to map nerve locations before surgery
  • Failed osseointegration — the implant doesn't fuse with the bone. Uncommon (less than 5% of cases). If it happens, we remove and replace at no additional implant cost under our warranty
  • Sinus complications — only a risk for upper jaw implants, managed with sinus lift where indicated
  • Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and certain medications can increase failure risk — we'll discuss your individual risk factors at consultation

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
